Following the departure of the Minnesota North Stars in 1993, the state of Minnesota was left without a professional hockey team. After two years in the Twin Cities, the team was sold to a group of Canadian businessmen in 1996 who relocated the team to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and promptly renamed them.
